Great Estates - The main drive approaching the north-facing fa fade of Great Hill, the Galen L. Stone estate off Delano Road in East Marion. Mr. Stone, a Boston investment banker, purchased the property in 1909 from a real-estate syndicate that had planned to subdivide the large tract of land known from Indian times as "Great Hill" into five-acre parcels. At the time, a large resort hotel called Marion House, built in 1860, occupied the site. Although there is no postcard depicting it, Marion House was four stories tall and could accommodate 300 guests. Stone had it demolished and immediately began plans for the construction of a rambling stone baronial hall, which was started in September 1909. 2nd - 4th digital photographs - additional views of the main drive approaching the north-facing fa fade of Great Hill over time. |
