Description |
Water Street - The residence of J.C. Rhodes, an industrialist, at 57 Water Street was owned by Mary E. Alien in 1908. She was the daughter of Capt. Henry Allen, another prominent Marion industrialist, who owned a shipbuilding yard on Water Street as well as interests in Marion's several salt-harvesting operations. Capt. Allen also owned stakes in clipper packets operating between New York and Liverpool, and coastal schooners trading up and down the Eastern seaboard. The Sippican Hotel and Austin estate are visible above the boathouse and to the right of the flagpole, respectively. This view dates to the early 1920s; the Rhodes house was razed in 1945. |
