    Miscellany - A view looking west on Pitcher Street with Split Rock in the foreground and Rose Cottage in the distance on the far side of Pleasant Street. The house gained its name from the numerous rose bushes planted around it. A U-shaped drive extended up the sides of the property and around the back of the house, with four conical fieldstone pillars flanking the driveway's two entrances.

Benjamin Spooner Briggs, skipper of the mystery brigantine Mary Celeste, which left its anchorage in New York Harbor, on November 5, 1872, and was found adrift with no one on board on December 4, off the Azores.
