BOSTON — Robert Norman Linde of Marion, Massachusetts died on September 11, 2009 at Brigham and Women's Hospital in the company of his wife of 49 years, Maud Linde, and his son, Jonathan. He was 75 years old. Mr. Linde was born in Darby, Pennsylvania to Leonard and Frances Linde, and spent the early years of his childhood in Drexel Hill, Pennsylvania and Centralia, Missouri. When he was 16, his family moved to Needham, Massachusetts, where he graduated from high school. In 1956, he graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology with a degree in electrical engineering. Mr. Linde spent the lion's share of his engineering career with GTE Government Systems in Needham, Massachusetts, retiring in 1993 as a senior systems engineer. During his tenure there, he worked on a variety of classified military and civilian aerospace projects, resided for several years in the Marshall Islands, and earned an advanced degree in computer engineering from Boston University. While on assignment to Vancouver, British Columbia, Mr. Linde acquired a large-format view camera and devoted much of his time to documenting the area's spectacular scenery. After retiring, he returned to Massachusetts and pursued landscape photography professionally. His subjects included the intricate South Coast shorelines that extend from Wareham to Westport as well as the fishing fleets of New Bedford and Fairhaven. He was the proprietor of Cottage Lane Studios and co-owner of the Centre Street Gallery in New Bedford; his work is currently on display at the Rogers Gallery in Mattapoisett. In 2006, Commonwealth Editions published a collection of commissioned photographs taken by Mr. Linde entitled South Coast, Massachusetts. Mr. Linde was a member of the Marion Philosophical Society and past chairman of the Marion Cultural Council. During the 90's, Mr. Linde, Maud, and one of several golden retrievers the two had rescued, spent summers together on their island located on Maine's Moosehead Lake. Close friends, Mr. Linde and Jon loved to talk about politics and science and shared an enthusiasm for things old and noisy, including vintage sports cars, airplanes, and steam locomotives. Along with his wife and son, Mr. Linde is survived by his brother, Sam Linde; his daughter-in-law, Sara Merena Linde, and his beloved grandchildren, Theodore and Caroline; his nieces, Sarah Wellhausen and Sara Linde, nephew Peter Leondedis, and four grandnephews. |
