MARION - John J. DePina Sr., 99, of Marion, died Saturday, Jan. 17 in the Sippican Healthcare Center, Marion. He was the husband of the late Mary E. (Matthews) DePina who died Jan. 1, 2009. They were married for 79 years, holding the record as the longest married couple in Massachusetts. He was the son of the He was born in Fogo, Cape Verde Islands, the son of the late Zackaria and Mary (Pina) DePina, Mr. DePina lived in Marion for most of his life. Mr. DePina worked in the cranberry industry and trucking industry and was a mechanic for TriCity in Middleboro. He acquired land in Marion and later sold house lots. He then attended school in Missouri to learn engine repair and began DePina’s Lawn Mower service, which he ran successfully for 40 years. Mr. DePina had also driven the school bus in the Town of Marion and left a great impression on the school children. He enjoyed growing apples in his two-acre orchard and giving apples away to families in the area at holidays. Mr. DePina donated land to the Town of Marion, which was first known as DePina Beach and now known as DePina Landing. He enjoyed traveling throughout the United States and was known as the DePina Family historian. He was a communicant of St. Rita’s Church in Marion. Mr. DePina leaves three sons, John DePina Jr. of East Freetown, Donald DePina of New Bedford and Manuel DePina and his wife, Beverly, of Hyde Park; four daughters, Jeannette Oliveira of Roslindale, Lorraine Gonsalves of Georgia, Dolores O’Neil and her husband, Joseph, of Fairhaven and Inez Delgado of Kingston; a brother, Peter J. DePina and his wife, Dominga, of Hanson; a sister, Rose Roberts of Norton; 23 grandchildren; 36 great grandchildren; 15 great-great grandchildren; one great-great-great grandchild; many nephews and nieces. One son, Jules DePina predeceased him. Buried in St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Wareham. |
