Samuel J. Barr Jr., 91, died peacefully at home June 24, 2009, in Marion, Mass. Born Sept. 3, 1917, in Jersey City, N.J., he was the son of Margaret and Samuel Barr. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and also served in the Korean conflict. He began his professional career as a systems administrator installing and maintaining the first computer system for American Broadcasting Company in New York City. He served as comptroller of Queens College in Queens, N.Y., until his retirement in 1974. He, with his wife Margaret, raised their family in Glen Cove, N.Y., where he lived on Margaret Street until 2006 when he moved to Marion, Mass., to be closer to his family. He summered for more than 40 years in Round Pond, leading the 4th of July Round Pond parade for 22 years. He was a supporter of many local charities and the children of the village. He was a redhead with the gifts of humor, intelligence, wisdom, patience and a sensational memory. He was a sounding board and supporter of his children and grandchildren. He was the generous neighbor always available to help. He was the compassionate friend to those in need. He found endless humor in life and in relationships. He remained well read, and finished the New York Times crossword puzzles weekly. He loved hearing and telling stories, and he remembered everything. He is survived by two daughters, Jamie Gartelmann and her husband, Peter, of Schooley’s Mountain, N.J., and Merry Conway and her husband, John, of Marion, Mass.; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. A private burial will take place at the Chamberlain Cemetery.
