Poem to Obed and Veronah on their 50th Wedding Anniversary "To Capt. Mrs Obed Delano; a toast. Oh here's to the health of Veronah and Obed, Who, together were just fifty short years ago, wed; Your friends are all gathered (and foes you have none) To greet the glad day when you two were made one. How well you have stood it, this fifty years' racket; Veronah, pray tell us your secret of youth? And Obed,- though not quite a brand new steam packet,- To call you a wreck, would be far from the truth. Your secret of happiness let me rehearse; Hard work you've not feared; nor thought children a curse; For the sake of your loved ones yourselves you've denied; And to do your whole duty, you've earnestly tried. Have you thought as you toiled that the account was all debit? Behold:- our affections shall turn it to credit. So, here's to you Obed, and you dear Veronah; We all drink your health,- from Jim down to 'Nonah." |
