WAREHAM — Warren Hathaway Hiller, 78, of Marion, passed away Sunday, October 4, 2009, at Tobey Hospital in Wareham after a long illness. He was the widower of Else G.W. Hiller and son of the late Elwood and Marion (Thurber) Hiller. He was born in New Bedford and lived in Marion all his life. He went to Tabor Academy where he was a member of the soccer team and attended Brown University in Rhode Island. He was in the US Coast Guard from 1952 until 1954 when he received an honorable discharge. He was the proprietor of the Sippican Coffee Shop in Marion from 1955 to 1983. In the early 1970's, he would drive his van to Tabor Academy's Lillard Hall and set up "shop" there with coffee and donuts for faculty and students as there weren't any vending machines at the school at that time. Warren will be remembered for the Christmas parties he held at the coffee shop and the many bus trips he organized to Red Sox games. After selling the coffee shop he operated the blueberry patch for Eastover Farm for many years. Mr. Hiller was a charter member of the Marion Social Club for 29 years and an honorary member of the Marion Fire Department Association for 35 years. He also belonged to the Adoniram Royal Arch Chapter in New Bedford, Sutton Commandery 016 in New Bedford, Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite, NB Council Royal & Select Master Masons, Pythagorean Lodge A.F. & A.M. in Marion, Shrine Club of SE Massachusetts and Shriner's of North America. Warren was a sweet, loving family man with many friends. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. He enjoyed spending time on the water and fishing. He enjoyed watching the Red Sox, Patriots and golf. He enjoyed spending time with his family and many friends who had several nicknames for him including Curley, Moodic, Sweetie and Wo-Wo. The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the ICU Staff at Tobey Hospital, Drs. Tom Gleason and Herbert Hansen, the nurses at the Center for Cancer Care, and Fairhaven Community Nurse Association (Sue and Marlene) for all their care and concern during his illness. A special thank you to Terry and Robin Gibbs for your love and concern for Warren and for including him in so many outings. He is survived by his 4 step-children, Bonnie Brown of Carver, Elin Waagen-Snow of Middlebury and Dummerston, VT, Tore Waagen of Hyannis, and Anita Waagen of Marion, his caretaker and with whom he lived. He is also survived by 6 grandchildren, Edwin A. Brown, Jr., of Wareham, Erin R. Spooner of Marion, Lars Cartwright of VT, Andrew and Kyle Cartwright, both of Utah. He is also survived by 4 great-grandchildren; several cousins; nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his twin brother, Bruce E. Hiller and eldest brother, Jay E. Hiller. |
