SHERBORN - Mary Cleeves Dawson, 91, of Sherborn, formerly of Marion and Cambridge, died Friday, Dec. 19, at home after a short illness. She was the wife of the late Kenneth Arnot Dawson. Mrs. Dawson and her husband owned a home in Marion where they vacationed for many years before moving there in 1987 from Cambridge. Mrs. Dawson had a lifelong passion for art. She attended Carnegie Institute of Technology (later Carnegie-Mellon University) on a full scholarship and earned a degree in painting and design. Mrs. Dawson worked at the Carnegie Museum under Otto von Fueher, preparing lifelike dioramas for animal and bird exhibits. After college she worked at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston in the Department of Restoration. While working at the MFA, she met her husband. During World War II, she studied Engineering Drawing at Northeastern University as part of the war effort. As a result of that training, she worked for Zenith Products in West Newton, where she produced mechanical drawings of the special purpose pumps they manufactured. She also published several stories and illustrated poems in children’s magazines such as Child Life. The Dawson’s were married in August of 1945 and began their forty-year business partnership at the Kenneth A. Dawson Co., where Mrs. Dawson produced all of the mechanical drawings for Mr. Dawson’s scientific instrument inventions. Mrs. Dawson continued her active participation in the community when she moved to Marion. She was a lifetime member of the League of Women Voters, and served on the Marion League board. She also joined the Sippican Woman Club, was a member of St. Gabriel’s Episcopal Church where she volunteered as a church warden, a Stevens Ministry peer counselor and for The Women of St. Gabriel’s. Mary’s church kneeler, which she designed and stitched, was recently displayed on St. Gabriel’s weekly bulletin cover. She won many awards throughout her career and frequently exhibited at the Cambridge Art Association, the Copley Society of Boston and the Marion Art Center. She also exhibited at the Onset Bay Gallery, Wenniger Graphics, Rogers Gallery, Botolph Gallery and Gallery of World Art. She was 81 when she had her last one-woman show at the Marion Art Center. She leaves a daughter, Constance Dawson, of Sherborn, son-in-law, Paul Roggenbuck, daughter-in-law, Susan Dawson; five grandchildren, Erich and Peter Roggenbuck and Robert, Benjamin and Lucy Dawson. |
